Aerobic septic systems in Lake Charles

Calcasieu Parish often requires mechanical aerobic treatment units when soil is poor, groundwater is high or the lot is small. The Parish and the Louisiana Department of Health both publish guidance on these systems.

How an ATU differs from a conventional tank

An aerobic treatment unit adds oxygen with a blower or air pump so bacteria break sewage down more thoroughly. Most units have a trash chamber, aeration chamber, clarifier, disinfection (often a chlorinator) and an alarm.

Why they are common here

High water tables and clay soils around Lake Charles frequently fail a percolation test for a conventional drain field. When that happens, LDH permits an aerobic plant with an approved effluent-reduction method instead.
